An Ex-Fan's Reevaluations

Last night, laboriously typed on the dismal keypad of my dismal Sony Ericsson Satio, I posted the following (http://community.livejournal.com/sheldon_penny/1238384.html) on the Sheldon/Penny LJ Comm. If any BBT fans read this, perhaps it'll be of some interest.

"This evening, Tasha and I caught up with the last few episodes. And, well, I'm about to give up on this show.

I'm typing on my phone, so I'll be brief and top up tomorrow.

Anyway, just watched that abysmal apology episode, and with it has passed, I think, the last of my belief in this show. Now, I know criticism of the show is frowned upon, but what's the point in being a fan if there's nothing but blind, unquestioning squee?

I'll expound further tomorrow, when I'm not tapping tiny boxes on a phone. The key points, though, are that the writing's gone downhill, hit the bottom, crashed through the mantle and currently trying to reenact the dismally hilarious film "The Core"...

Where was I?

Oh yes. Sheldon juvenilisation; alcohol fixations; Sheldon constantly being victimised; the nigh-total disappearance of any actual geek comedy in favour of tedious, unfunny frat-boy "humour"... I'll go into more detail tomorrow, but in the meantime - is anyone else close to giving up? I'm about ready to declare everything post-s2 non-canon...

As it happens, I've decided to instead rewatch season 4 from the start (who knows, maybe I'll even do an analysis of all four seasons at some point) and put together a nice, coherent argument. But I've got a busy few days ahead of me, so we'll see when it appears.

The bottom line is this: I still like Sheldon and Penny as characters, but I don't like any of the characters as they're currently being written.

Oh, and my shrink - a recognised expert on Aspergers - reckons Sheldon shows "easily enough" signs to be diagnosable. Take that, Chuck Lorre.

I deleted my response over at Px, because I really don't feel welcome over there.

But I utterly agree with you, both as to disliking the direction of the writing (I quit watching at the end of S3) whilst still liking the original conceptions of the two characters. Problem is, there are far more people who find that type of humour appealing than not, and in a world governed by ratings and 'product', quantity wins out over subjective quality.
