I was glancing through a few friends' LJs, and lifted a slightly interesting experiment from [livejournal.com profile] gipsy_dreamer's LJ. So I'll give it a go.

The idea is this:

  • Set media player on random

  • Post the first line from the first 32 songs to play, whatever they are. (Presumably the original idea was written by someone who didn't believe in instrumental tracks.)

  • Let people guess the song (and singer, though given that half of the tunes I have are jazz and rock & roll standards that could prove tricky).

  • Bold each song when someone guesses correctly.

  • Guessers - looking them up is cheating. So there.

So here are mine, then:

  1. I hate to see the evening sun go down

  2. All aboard the night train

  3. Paid vacation in a foreign land - "You're In The Army Now", Status Quo ([livejournal.com profile] gipsy_dreamer)

  5. Got a few jingles janglin' in my pocket

  6. Deep down in Louisiana close to New Orleans - "Johnny B Goode", Chuck Berry ([livejournal.com profile] burntcopper, Chris)

  7. Turn it up, turn it up, turn it upside-down

  8. Czolgosz, working man, born in the centre of Michigan - "Ballad of Czolgosz", Stephen Sondheim (Haarhzh)

  9. Gloria, you're always on the run now

  10. My life will never be the same, 'cause girl you came and changed...

  11. I was born in Li'l Rock, had a childhood sweetheart

  12. I love coffee, I love tea - "Java Jive", Manhattan Transfer (Chris)

  13. We get it on most every night

  14. I don't need no TV, I don't need... - "Do Your Thing", Chantz ([livejournal.com profile] running_swift)

  15. Don't know about the future, that's anybody's guess

  16. Listen to the ground, there is movement all around

  17. Oh, I like to dream... yes yes, right between the sound machine

  18. I was sitting by the phone, I was waiting all alone

  21. Done work, hot night, last thing that I needed was a fight

  22. Said to the man at the railroad station, "I want a ticket just for one"

  24. Come on, baby don't you wanna go

  25. Well since my baby left me, I found a new place to dwell - "Heartbreak Hotel", Elvis Presley ([livejournal.com profile] burntcopper)

  26. The night was clear, and the moon was yellow

  27. Harbours open their arms to the young, searching foreigner

  28. Adesso no, non voglio piu difendermi

  29. I have a dream... but anyway. This is the reformation preparation.

  30. La donna é mobile, qual piuma al vento - "La Donna è Mobile", Giuseppe Verdi (sung by Pavarotti, in this case) ([livejournal.com profile] silly_swordsman)

  31. Somebody was spreading rumours, 'bout better days a-coming

  32. Everything I have to do will never be done, only cause I'm very very lazy - "Lift Me Up", The Real Group ([livejournal.com profile] running_swift)

Just a warning - I'm listing the singers performing them as they came up. Many of them aren't the original artist - in many cases I can't remember the original artist. Bear with me. ;-)

Oh, and bonus points if you in your guess can quote the next line.

Nope. A hint: the singer played a role in several of the Die Hard films.

Unless it's Bruce Willis I'm out of the game unless I look it up.

It is Bruce Willis. :-)

Another hint: it's on his "The Return of Bruno" album, which is a great CD in its own right.
