The Con Report In Retrospect

In Retrospect

No two DWCons are the same, but some things are always certain. There will be insanity. There will be immense amounts of fun. There will be sleep deprivation. There will be a ConCom bearing, by the end of it, a startling resemblance to the living dead. Really happy living dead, but well zonked either way.

But perhaps best of all, the certainty above even the other certainties, there will be plenty of people who are just great fun to be around, and you find yourself looking forward to the next Con because there’s not enough time to chat to all of them as much as you’d like.

So thanks to the ConCom for making it all happen. Thanks to the hotel staff for being friendly and helpful where possible, particularly the guy who sorted out the Twixes for me and the trainee who handled my checkin with valour in the face of computers. Thanks to Pat Harkin on behalf of all us nuts for the birth of a meme. We’re sitting ducks and loving it.

(By the way, whoever had the radio-controlled Luggage: you, sir, are a raving genius.)

And thanks to all those whose ears I bent, particularly those who put up with me for more than a few minutes; Constable Haddock, Lionel Fanthorpe, Colin Smythe, the D’Arcy sisters, Sabremeister, the Murphy sisters, Cat, Essy, Heather, Dom and Hugslut (Gemma?)[1], Graham, CCA, Eric Jarvis, the Swedish crowd, the always great Cloggie Contingent[2], the guild deputies (Loriba and Ssirienna)... and of course the one and only Glingle Feegle. It’s reassuring to know that when they do finally come to take me away, at least I’ll be in good company. ;-)

There was someone else I was chatting to, too... hat, beard, you might have seen him about the place... Anyway, he signed the inside cover of my programme, which was nice of him.[3] Oh, and he’s written some books you might have heard of. So thanks to him too.

Quack!

[1] Behold the hazards of having larger writing on t-shirts than on nametags. Sorry!

[2] Het volgende keer moet ik meer nederlands spreken... het is veel te lang geleden, ik wil ’t niet vergeten.

[3] You knew that double-cover programme was going to reappear somewhere, didn’t you?

I'm already pondering the options for a Con08NostalgiaMeetMiniCon, so who knows. :-p

You found the link to the other stories I posted?

Yeah, a couple of hours to clear the system and I was fine. It's just the timing that was annoying - that sort of thing should have the sense to wait until the gaps between programme items. In retrospect, I think what annoys me most is missing out on the cute little table dragons, but you can't win 'em all.

(Still dizzy and wobbly, but I reckon that's the lack of sleep... And my left hand's been tingling since about Friday, so if that continues I'll have it looked at. It's weird. Trapped nerve, perhaps; I'll see sooner or later.)

Problem with camping is that it involves camping. Mud and I have an agreement; it doesn't bother me, and I don't bother it. It made things complicated when I went tank driving, but ho hum. ;-)

Well there's not actually much in the way of mud where I live...It just means that the big bit of grass is going to need a good trimming...

Also I'm going to keep reminding you about that costume idea...perhaps that would be a better one for marching to Colonel Bogey...a platoon of marching Name Tags...

Well I'm definately up for it...although it'll be worse than the Feegle costume for sitting down in!

Behold the hazards of having larger writing on t-shirts than on nametags. Sorry!

We could try to make the nametags larger than the T-shirts.

Or insist the T-shirts are smaller than the name tags.

I don't think you'd appreciate the results.

I imagine some would approve of option two. But I suspect the easiest solution is to have smaller writing on ordinary-sized shirts. A novel approach but, I think, a winning one. ;-)

Oh no... you've summoned a plot bunny. Or a costume bunny, at least.

I hope two years is long enough to forget my cunning plan to dress up as a giant walking name tag...

Oh, no. Our memories are long.

(Unless stunned by large admixtures of strong alcohol.)

I guess that's four hall costumes decided for Con '10, then... ;-)

I'm thinking a big A2-size cardboard name tag. Sticky-backed plastic, and all that. If I remember to make mine.

That's the plan. Of course, we'll need to get the colour scheme and stuff from the ConCom first, so they're accurate.
